Satire Post #1

Scary Movie is not considered Satire for one reason: It does not take a stand on any issue what-so-ever. While, in my opinion, all the of the movies in the ‘Scary Movie’ series are really funny, all they are are paraodies on other movies. TV shows like the Simpsons clearly take an affirmative position on the “dysfunctional family”, and are therefore satire. I personally enjoy sattire very much, and I think it’s a very clever and effective way to deal with issues one feels strongly about. The potential is so great–in other words, forms of satire can range from very funny (Simpsons) to very gruesome and disturbing (A Modest Proposal). Sometimes it bothers me when people do not recognize satire when they see it. For example, the creator of the Simpsons feels very strongly about dysfunctional families, but many people skip right over that aspect of the show.

I agree with your assessment of how Scary Movie cannot be considered satire. They definitely don’t take a stand and in addition to that, they aren’t major problems or issues whatsoever. Also I’m going to have to disagree with you on the second part of your blog on how A Modest Proposal was gruesome. You commented it on my post too, and I think many people with agree with me when I say that eating babies is a very funny subject and not gruesome at all.

yeah, the eating babies thing was hilarious. All it was, was an entertaining idea because Ireland was starving. I really do not see anything gruesome about it. The way he explained it was to put people off the idea so that he could sort-of keep sanity in a time of insanity and starvation. At least as far as i remember. But i agree about “Scary Movie,” there’s no topic and they take on no problem, unlike “Borat” which beats “Scary Movie” in how funny it was, and how it actually had a point.
